The 30-50 feral hogs meme is still going strong. This is probably because the 30-50 feral hogs are distracting us from some pretty dark times and in a deliciously ridiculous way.
It all started in a horrible place: on Saturday, there were two back to back mass shootings. Our president is blaming video games and mental illness, instead of the need for serious gun control. This seems to be a pattern in our country, and the usual debates erupted. One side wonders why it’s fairly easy for someone to get their hands on a gun that can kill nine people in under thirty seconds. Gun nuts have their side of the debate, too, and it largely centers on the semantics of what an “assault weapon” technically is.
Musician Jason Isbell referred to that debate on Twitter, stating, “If you’re on here arguing the definition of ‘assault weapon’ today you are part of the problem. You know what an assault weapon is, and you know you don’t need one.”
A guy named William McNabb had a very strange response.
“How do I kill the 30-50 feral hogs that run into my yard within 3-5 mins while my small kids play?” he asked Isbell.
Is McNabb serious? Well, it’s hard to tell. There is definitely an argument that people living in rural communities might have more of a need for guns, to defend themselves from wildlife (or other people). It seems less likely that children are getting stampeded by 30-50 feral hogs without warning in their own backyards. Like, put up a fence? Pigs don’t fly!
The absurdity of McNabb’s comment, whether it’s a joke or not, took the Internet by storm. Maybe our brains are broken, maybe we needed some to make us laugh in our despair, maybe it’s just really fun to say “30-50 feral hogs” over and over. But each of these tweets is an absolute delight:
