Matthew McConaughey Is Officially A Film Professor At The University Of Texas

That’s Professor Matthew McConaughey to you. The actor and producer will be moving up in academia from visiting instructor at the University of Texas at Austin to a professor of practice. 

McConaughey has been teaching at UT’s Moody College of Communication since 2015 where his courses include film production. According to the University of Texas’ press announcement, “he began co-teaching the Script to Screen film production class with faculty member and director Scott Rice. He developed the course’s curriculum, which provides a unique, behind the scenes view of each stage of a film’s production.” 

Professor McConaughey’s class will focus on “walking through an entire motion picture from the first draft of the script to postproduction and release,” said Jay Bernhardt, dean of Moody College. 

“It’s the class I wish I would have had when I was in film school,” McConaughey said.

“Working in the classroom with these students gives me a chance to prepare them. Making movies, turning words on paper into film, is both science and art—no matter the time or generation. The elements of truth and genuine joy for the process are timeless. That will always be our classroom focus.”

“Matthew cares deeply for our school and our students, and we are thrilled that he shares his time and talent to help prepare the next generation of media leaders and innovators,” Bernhardt said.

McConaughey, who won a Best Actor Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club, is an alum of UT Austin. He received a film degree in 1993. 

Other celebrities who have instructed at the university level include Angelina Jolie, Oprah, and Spike Lee. 

While it’s wonderful that McConaughey wants to give back to his school and work with young people, don’t forget that most universities rely on an increasingly contingent faculty who are not adequately financially compensated for their work and have no job stability!
