The old adage “truth is stranger than fiction” exists for a reason. We’ve seen that firsthand over the past several years in the United States, as so much happening in politics has played out in ways that seem cartoonish and too absurd for even the least subtle blockbuster movies.
But it applies in a more personal sense, too, as anyone who has recounted a wild story to their friends only to have them scoff in disbelief and proclaim “pics or it didn’t happen” can attest.
Now people are getting the opportunity to share these stories with a wider audience, after @AMythicWitch prompted folks on Twitter to reply her post with “a true story from your life that sounds made up.”
She went first, offering up an anecdote about how staff at a Red Robin gaslit her into believing they didn’t accidentally drop a rusty screw under the bun of her burger before serving it.
The trend exploded from there, with people sharing all sorts of stories, sad and funny, and commiserating about how difficult it is to get others to believe them.
