Women in the music industry have always had a tough time gaining acceptance from critics and audience ratings when they release provocative music. Seasoned artists such as Miley Cyrus, Jessie J, Nikki Minaj, and Cardi B have continued to push their risky music into the “Top-100” charts. Sexualization of music videos and promotion ads has paved the way for newer artists and all the freaks out there who find joy in songs about things that were once confined to the bedroom.
Some artists however (Madonna), are not too happy for their female counterparts, and with valid reason. Although it’s hard to approve name-calling from one female pop-star to another, Madonna was once highly ridiculed and judged for her attempts at sexual songs and didn’t quite receive the praise that these newer, younger artists are getting.
Now Madonna and acclaimed rapper Cardi B are going at it on the internet. So get comfortable and prepare yourself for some iconic drama.
Cardi B stated in her clap-back tweet: “These icons really become disappointments once u make it in the industry, that’s why I keep to myself.”
The drama started when Madonna marked the 30th anniversary of her coffee-table book “S.E.X.” by writing on her Instagram:
In addition to photos of me naked, there were photos of Men kissing Men, Woman kissing Woman and Me kissing everyone. I also wrote about my sexual fantasies and shared my point of view about sexuality in an ironic way.
She continued:
I spent the next few years being interviewed by narrow minded people who tried to shame me for empowering myself as a Woman. I was called a whore, a witch, a heretic and the devil. Now Cardi B can sing about her WAP. Kim Kardashian can grace the cover of any magazine with her naked ass and Miley Cyrus can come in like a wrecking ball.
She concluded her post with a very controversial final statement:
You’re welcome bitches ……. (clown face emoji).
Madonna
Needless to say, Cardi B was not too thrilled about being referred to as “bitches” in front of Madonna’s millions of followers and the internet in general. So she did what any celebrity would do to get justice- she called out Madonna on Twitter.
She wrote: “I literally payed this woman homage so many times cause I grew up listening to her …she can make her point without putting clown emojis and getting slick out the mouth ..These icons really become disappointments once u make it in the industry that’s why I keep to myself.”
Under her tweet, Cardi attached a screengrab from a Billboard article posted back in 2018 when she first met Madonna, who at the time was her idol. In the article, she explained her love for the artist.
On Instagram she said,
I met my real life IDOL Madonna. I can’t even believe I performed at her event and it was the most meaningful performance ever, I grew up with my mom listening to Madonna for hours. I performed ‘Material Girl’ freshman year in High school, listen to her on all my photo shoots to have super confidence and always mentioned her in my interviews. The best part about it is she was everything i thought she would be a Liberal Kick ass feminist bitch. I’m soo happy.”
It is known that Madonna and Cardi had previously worked together. Both featured on the 2018 Quavo song “Champagne Rosé.” In the music video for “Up”, Cardi even paid homage to Madonna by wearing a cone bra that was inspired by Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier look.
