If there’s someone on Twitter who is powerful enough to order around the president’s social media account, it’s Chrissy Teigen. As the unofficial Mayor of Twitter, it was a big deal when Donald Trump blocked her from following the @POTUS account in 2017.
When President Joe Biden was elected, one of the many things he had to turn around from the Trump era was this Twitter malfeasance. I doubt it was on his immediate list, but Teigen levied her online power to get his attention, writing, “hello @joebiden I have been blocked by the president for four years can I get a follow plz.”
Biden’s social media manager got right on that, and she was supposedly the only non-government-related account the president is following. I doubt he does much scrolling on the timeline. That’s hard to imagine, considering Trump did most of his governing through frightening tweets, but Biden doesn’t seem like a guy attached to his phone.
Just the same, the follow didn’t make Teigen as happy as she hoped, because she was thinking about how the president might potentially be reading her tweets.
She ended up begging Biden to UN-follow her, so she could be free to go wild again:
“I have tweeted a handful of times since my treasured @POTUS following,” she wrote. “In order for me to flourish as me, I must ask you to please lord unfollow me. I love you!!! It’s not you it’s me!!!!”
And it worked. Biden unfollowed and Teigen is free again:
But it’s still an emotional disconnect:
Biden will surely be informed of the drama any day now.
