Michelle Williams is arguably more accomplished than 98% of all people on the planet. She’s a singer, an actress, one of the original members of Destiny’s Child, she’s performed on Broadway and won and Grammy. And now she is a writer, with her book Checking In coming out in May.
The memoir is an exploration of her struggle with depression, and how she dealt with it throughout her career and the end of her engagement in 2018, she told Essence in an interview.
“I’m ready to share, I’ve been a very transparent person and now I’m ready to share the good, bad, and ugly parts of my journey—the concerning part of my journey,” she said. “I really go into the specifics, I really go into the first time I was diagnosed, I go into assessing the first time I had anxiety in a romantic relationship and what it did to that relationship and then subsequently what it did to the next one.”
To promote her book, Williams went on Instagram to talk about it a little, and for the most part, fans were grateful to have someone they could relate to who they have also looked up to for so long.
But one “fan” really jumped online just to try and make Williams feel bad about where she is in life. In comments captured by The Shade Room, they wrote, “Michelle, I love you but you need some children…u r 2 bored.”
Sadly, a lot of people who don’t understand depression think stuff like this—that mental health issues are only experienced by people who have time to think about them. Those people often seem to also think throwing some babies on the problem will help.
At first, Williams kept her response simple by replying, “You’re an idiot!!!!” with six laughing face emojis.
The guy wouldn’t leave it, and answered, “Woooooooow that was uncalled for. Thank you.”

So Williams really went in.
“No, what’s uncalled for is you telling a woman that she needs to have children. What if that woman CAN’T have children?? What if that woman DOESN’T WANT children??” she said. “WATCH YOUR MOUTH and FINGERS … Don’t you ever let that come out of your mouth or your fingers on a comment section again to ANYBODY.”
She added, “I would have ignored [you] but too many people need to stay out of a woman’s uterus!!! Now scram and be blessed!!!”
