2020 has been rough for everyone, and we just got a reminder that even celebrities are grappling with demons in lockdown.
Comedian and unproblematic icon John Mulaney recently checked himself into a rehabilitation center for alcohol and cocaine addiction and people are showing their support.
I care more about John Mulaney than most of the people I’ve actually met
— caitie delaney (@caitiedelaney) December 21, 2020
Mulaney has always been open about his path toward sobriety and shared his challenges in a 2019 Esquire profile.
“I never liked smoking pot,” he said. “Then I tried cocaine, and I loved it. I wasn’t a good athlete, so maybe it was some young male thing of ‘This is the physical feat I can do. Three Vicodin and a tequila and I’m still standing. Who’s the athlete now?'”
Mulaney, who is beloved for his hilarious, self-deprecating, never-punches-down comedy style, received an outpouring of loving messages on Twitter.

I love John Mulaney. His shows never fail to make me happy. And hearing the news that he is going into rebah–or anyone going in–I always take that as good news? It means that is a step toward getting well–a good and healthy one. So all good health and happiness to him.

.@mulaney is insanely talented, and was way nicer to me than he needed to be when he did @TheSimpsons. I hope he & everyone who’s struggling these days get the help they need.

The only jokes I want to hear about @mulaney in rehab are the jokes he tells about it after he gets out. #mulaney #onedayatatime
