The Brief: A scene from Greta Gerwig’s 2019 film adaptation of the classic 1868 novel Little Women has become a meme: Laurie (Timothée Chalamet) professes his love for Jo March (Saoirse Ronan) and asks for her hand in marriage; she rejects him, pleading “I can’t.”
Little Women is a classic story about growing up, and part of growing up is getting messy when it comes to love. The book and film’s protagonist, Jo March, is adored by her rich neighbor, Laurie, who is in turn loved by her little sister Amy. It’s a whole thing. In the recent Greta Gerwig adaptation, Jo is played by Saoirse Ronan and Laurie is played by Timothée Chalamet.
The two actors have undeniable chemistry, and in the scene where Laurie confesses his love and his desire to marry Jo so they can live happily ever after, that chemistry becomes combustible.

“I can’t, I can’t” Jo insists. “I’ve tried it, I can’t.”
The clip of the emotional moment was shared by Twitter user @debickix and it immediately became a big ole joke on Twitter. Everyone is sharing the clip along with the things they’ve tried, but just can’t do. They’re all actually pretty relatable. We’re all Jo sometimes, and unfortunately, we’re all also sometimes Laurie.
