Is anyone actually a fan of the 😂, or “cry-laughing,” “face-with-tears-of-joy” emoji? I’m not.
For starters, it’s kinda overkill, in that we could probably count on one hand the number of times, in all human history, when someone literally squirted big old salty tears out of their eyes because of something you texted them. It’s basically the emoji equivalent of “ROFL” in that sense, since not only is rolling on the floor or crying laughing something we don’t do, we really rarely even laugh audibly.
It feels like we could express all the real or exaggerated laughter we need with just the 😀 and 😁 emoji, right?
Then there’s the whole issue of the “cry-laughing” emoji’s proximity to the 😢 and other sad emoji and the hilarious times boomers (and millennials alike) have been confused by what it really means. Just a PSA: It does NOT mean “crying.”
And that’s truly a shame, but hey, at least it makes for good comedy?
