With unemployment rates skyrocketing due to the coronavirus pandemic, one might think that those looking for work would be hard-pressed to turn down a job. (In this economy??) You might think twice, however, after taking a gander at an “assistant to influencer” job listing that recently went viral for—well, reasons that are about to become abundantly clear.
Assistant to influencer? What could possibly go wrong there?
The job listing, which ostensibly seeks an assistant for a “well-known celebrity/influencer with 10+ million followers” was flagged by New York Times style reporter Taylor Lorenz, who tweeted screenshots from the Entertainment Careers website where it was originally posted—adding a few extremely fitting eyeball emojis.

Among the requirements of the job listing, of which there are many, include 24/7 accessibility, the ability to remain “emotionless” at all times, regardless of what the job demands of you, as well as tasks ranging from cooking and cleaning to pre and post-production work.
And for this incredibly complex myriad of job responsibilities with zero work-life balance, the lucky applicant is eligible to make … [checks notes, takes off glasses and squints] … ah, yes, $25 to $30 per hour, with “minimal days off.”
In what should come as little surprise, the job listing was shared on social media like wildfire, as people became flabbergasted that anyone would actually put themselves through such blatant misery for, again, a job that caps out as $30 per hour.
a ‘part-time’ position that requires you 24/7 and on property 8 hrs a day while remaining quiet and emotionless https://t.co/ltE3tfpAHO

My favourite part of this is “must not be/seem driven by fame”. So you want someone to be lackey to a celebrity/influencer to the point of having no life of their own, but who has no interest in fame? Good luck! https://t.co/EvFKFj55lT

The job listing was eventually removed from the career site, although it’s unclear whether or not the position was filled first. We would have to assume it was not, but who knows! There are plenty of fame-hungry people in the world who might see this as an opportunity to soak up the limelight. As they say, a fool and his dignity are soon parted.
