Mackenzie Smith, 23, shamed people on social media for “binge-watching Netflix” and “living day by day” … and the internet is not having it.
Smith says she works to help people live their lives “filled with happiness” but her viral tweet is what people are talking about.
Smith claims she’s not like other people her age. She wrote:
Most 23 year olds: – partying every weekend – eating fast food – binge watching Netflix – living day by day.
“Me: – starting my own business – optimising my health – learning new skills – developing a growth mindset – at the gym everyday.
“We are not the same.”
But the response was not good.
Some people did say they were inspired by Smith’s tough love but most people claimed she was just being cruel to others in order to make herself feel better… and sell a self-help book in the thread of the Tweet.
Smith seemed to find validation in the criticism. She said:
“I’ve taken heat for my tweets before so this is nothing new to me.
“I specifically word tweets like this one to be polarising. It grabs people’s attention and helps connect me with others who think the same way.
“Ultimately, I’m secure in what I’m doing because I know my intent.
“The only reason I’m posting content is to provide value, inspire, and help others. That’s the end goal.
“People will always interpret content to fit their own perspective on the world.
“If they choose to be offended and lash out, so be it. That just means my content wasn’t intended for them.”
Thousands replied with offense, however.
User @notmywiener wrote “Okay so whilst you were 23 you were living your best life, when I was 23 I was battling depression, bpd, anxiety and still am. But here I am still alive, still fighting, every single day. Your accomplishments are no better than mine, just different. We are not the same.”
Another wrote “Knocking others down to build yourself up? Perhaps work a little on that growth mindset.”
Another user said, “Imagine being 23, the age when you’re probably most free in terms of lack of responsibility combined with disposable income, and not enjoying yourself.
“It’s not some great achievement to be grinding 24/7 at a time when it’s totally acceptable to relax and enjoy yourself.”
It should be noted that Smith’s breed of training includes never taking rest days, getting off antidepressants, and other dangerous “self-help guru” style “inspiration.”
