Flying in an airplane is wild. Just cramming into a tin can with hundreds of sweaty strangers and launching into the air. It’s amazing. A genuine miracle. We’re laughing in the face of God every time the wheels leave the tarmac. But with greedy airlines inflating prices and shrinking legroom, we quickly forget how cool it is that we can go anywhere in the world within hours — something only the most recent generations of humanity could even fathom.
That’s why I like to look out the window and appreciate how amazing it is just to be up there. Sometimes I’ll imagine an old historical figure like George Washington sitting next to me, just freaking the fuck out. He’ll be like “Gadzooks! We’re trapped in the belly of a winged demon!” And I’ll be like “Chill, Georgie, have some peanuts.” Then I’ll pull up the in-flight movie menu and play The Patriot. Calms him down every time.
