A meme can be born from anything: An awkward facial expression, a video still taken out of context, or some random slice of pop culture that resurfaces after years in obscurity.
While England’s Princess Diana is a famous figure, considering that she died tragically in 1997 you wouldn’t expect her to be the source of a meme in 2020. But thanks to the fourth season of The Crown debuting on Netflix that’s what’s happened, with the show’s recreation of a famous TV interview Diana gave getting memed right out of the gate.
In the clip Diana, portrayed by Emma Corin, makes a rapid sequence of odd facial expressions that people found too evocative to resist. Someone isolated the clip and put it on Twitter and a meme was born.
