The coronavirus has caused millions of Americans to lose their jobs, and millions more to get their wages. In a bid to alleviate financial hardships stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the IRS began distributing $290 billion in direct cash payments—around a $1200 stimulus check per U.S. taxpaying citizen—within the past week, as part of a $2 trillion CARES Act stimulus bill.
Almost immediately, stimulus deposit and stimulus check memes began to circulate on the Internet. These ranged in tone, from folks eagerly awaiting their checks, to those receiving their deposits on April 14 and 15, to those lightly (or not so lightly) ribbing the government for assuming a $1200 stimulus check has the ability to stimulate an economy that seems all but doomed for the foreseeable future.
