The last few weeks have seen a lot of statues fall, including those of Christopher Columbus, who “discovered” America and quickly committed genocide on the Indigenous population already living where he landed. In Bristol, a statue of a slave trader named Edward Colston was dumped in a river. A statue of King Louis XVI in Louisville lost a hand, to the consternation of the king’s living heir and the amusement of everyone else. In Virginia, a statue of Jefferson Davis was taken down by protestors as well.

Some people think defiling or dethroning a statue from a place of prominence is spitting in the face of history. Other people feel statues that glamorize slave traders and Confederate generals are spitting in the face of the people who have to walk by them every day. Historian James Barr didn’t take a direct position on twitter when he asked his followers to “name a statue that actually enhances its surroundings,” but he does imply there aren’t many.

He’s wrong! There are a lot of great statues out there, which people started sharing in the comments and across Twitter generally because statues are on everyone’s minds.
If we are going to commemorate things in bronze and stone, let’s pick worthier subjects. Like dogs or sleepy geese or James Gandolfini. We don’t need any more statues of Christopher Columbus. We all know what he did, and it’s nothing to be proud of.

If you are looking for statues of famous Italian Americans to replace Columbus, consider the 5 meter tall statue of Tony Soprano in Lithuania pic.twitter.com/8xlCFZAM0D
