The rules for reopening schools are different in every state, but most of them are at least nodding in the general direction of COVID-19 safety by insisting on masks and social distancing rules. What this actually looks like and how seriously it is enforced varies widely.
One student in Georgia was suspended for sharing a picture of their overcrowded hallway in which it appeared only a couple of kids were wearing masks out of dozens and dozens. The fact that schools are being opened at all at the height of the pandemic is a serious danger to not only students, but teachers, administration, and all the other departments that keep a school running.
Teachers have been sharing what their classrooms look like as they prepare for reopening. Some are trying to comply with social distancing orders, but simply don’t have the space.
Some are putting up sheets of plastic and shower curtains in an attempt to curtail the potential spread of the virus. Some are showing the paltry supplies and PPE they’ve been offered by the school district and others are trying to crowdfund for basic supplies like masks.
It’s truly shocking to see set up after set up in indoor spaces that are clearly not safe for preventing community spread of coronavirus. As Buzzfeed News reports, hundreds of students and faculty have been put under quarantine after some tested positive for the virus, just days after reopening. Setting up these classrooms is a total farce and a deadly one:

The PPE my school district so generously supplied me for the entire school year. 1 homemade face shield, a leaking bottle of hand sanatizer, 1 pair of gloves, and a saturated 1 layer mask. Kids were back to school today pic.twitter.com/MSBiNj22FN

When you see that a math teacher at Your local HS is having a GoFundMe for PPE because it is NOT supplied for the safety of everyone in those buildings, how on earth do YOU feel that the schools re-opening will be ok? This is insanity. @NJGov @GovMurphy @starledger pic.twitter.com/9EipPVeE03

One of my classrooms can only hold 6 desks while social distancing.
How in the world can parents willingly with full conscience and “of sound mind” think this is safe for your children.
This classroom typically has 20-25 students in it.

As president of a school board in Orange County, CA, I bought $85,000 worth of plexiglass for our 9,000 students to sit behind, and masks for all. That’s if we can get off the watch list of Governor @GavinNewsom . It’s tough out here in OC! Here’s a classroom set up. You like ? pic.twitter.com/QEHpZtmzlm

First look at my classroom since March 6, 2020. It’s like it was frozen in time. Now there are these obtrusive black barriers on some of the desks and that is the only change I see with the exception of the water fountain covered up with a black garbage bag. #livesoverlessons pic.twitter.com/qQAiyqgDSh
