Woman’s Allergic Reaction And Swollen Lip Triggered By Makeout Session

It doesn’t happen often, but kissing can trigger a serious allergic reaction in people who have food allergies.

Unfortunately for 27-year-old Janelle Gonzalez, she woke up with a pretty serious allergic reaction the morning after a date.

She woke up with a severely swollen upper lip. According to Janelle, this particular reaction is usually only experienced after she eats shrimp.

She said, “I started wracking my brain and the only thing I could come up with was this guy,” adding she spent some time making out with him.

She later asked her apologetic date if he had eaten shrimp or seafood earlier in the day.

Her date had in fact eaten shrimp fried rice earlier that day

Dr. Robert Sporter, a board-certified allergist says this type of indirect exposure can trigger an allergic reaction. There are many factors involved when it comes to how long food proteins remain in someone’s mouth.

Compared to direct exposure, like consuming the food yourself, this type of “thirdhand” exposure isn’t very common and doesn’t cause potentially life-threatening reactions such as anaphylaxis.

Common causes of allergic reactions include tree nuts, peanuts (which are legumes), eggs, milk, soy, or shellfish, as well as medicines like penicillin, insect bites, cosmetic products, and latex.

Gonzalez is grateful her allergic reaction didn’t require a trip to the hospital, like the time she had unknowingly eaten mushrooms stuffed with crab when she was 18.

In the now-viral TikTok, she jokingly warned viewers to “watch your backs out there” because it’s “not even safe to make out with men anymore.”

Although according to many comments, Gonzalez’s experience may be more common than previously thought.
