We’ve all gotten hit up for random bills. But this former college student couldn’t believe that his university keeps asking him for $2.
TikToker Joseph (@jo_sif) posted a string of emails he got from his alma mater, The College of William and Mary, repeatedly asking him to settle an outstanding $1.96 bill. (Scroll to the end to watch the full video.)
It all seemed ridiculous, considering that the university has an endowment of $1.3 billion. Why would they keep asking him to pay such a small debt?
Joseph noted the absurdity, writing in the clip: “Not my $1.3B endowed school hitting me up for $2 the past 8 months.”
At the end of the video, he replied to the school, saying, “are you guys hurting for the $1.96 or do y’all got this.”
The clip went viral, with more than 2.5 million views. Commenters were also stunned at how the university kept trying to collect such a small $2 debt.
Others had stories of their own, involving universities going after a tiny bill.
In a followup video, he explained that the charge was for printing fees — from 8 months ago.
In the finale, a representative from the college admits that the debt won’t go into collections if Joseph doesn’t pay it.
He then blocked their email address.
All of this comes as student debt remains extremely high in the U.S.
According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the collective student debt currently stands at $1.75 trillion. It’s owed by 45 million people, or one in seven Americans.
So yeah American university students are broker than ever. And even though Joseph blocked them, rest assured that the (extremely rich) university will still keep asking for its $2.
Here are the videos, enjoy the saga for yourself.
