Here’s a great remote work hack — just jiggle your mouse, so the boss thinks you’re working. Even if you have to set your alarm for it!
That’s what TikToker @poquitamaestrita showed off in a video showing her partner sleeping while apparently on the job. (Scroll to the end for the full video.)
The video’s text states: “He has alarms set to let him know when to jiggle his mouse a little so they think he’s still working.”
A little primitive? Sure, but it apparently works.
In fact, as remote work becomes more common, mouse hacks and all other sorts of shortcuts are becoming more popular.
There are even devices called “mouse jigglers” that you can put under your mouse that shake them automatically — to fool bosses into thinking you’re actually working.
There are also free downloads for software that do the same thing. You can even find YouTube videos, meant to be played on a smartphone screen with your mouse sitting on top that can (allegedly) trip its sensor.
Remote work has seen a huge bump during the pandemic. CNBC reports that in September, almost 10 percent of online job searches mentioned “remote work.” That was a nearly sixfold increase relative to September 2019.
“The pandemic has started a revolution in how we work, and our research shows working from home can make firms more productive and employees happier,” Nicholas Bloom, an economist at Stanford University, wrote in a paper.
Commenters on @poquitamaestrita’s video applauded the ingenuity of fooling the boss. Some even added their own hacks.
