Here’s a sad sign of the times: Taking an Uber is such a scary experience for women that some leave evidence in taxis and post it on TikTok, just in case something happens.
Tiktoker @brennalina shared video of herself (we presume) leaving strands of hair in her rideshare. (Skip to the end for the full video.)
She also touched the windows with her fingers to leave prints.
The reason? She’s leaving evidence so in case she goes missing, the authorities would know that she’d been in that car.
It’s heartbreaking to watch. But is it too much Law & Order? Or just being smart? Actually there’s a good reason for it.
CNN reports that in 2020, Uber recorded 141 reports of sexual assault in its cars in the United States.
In 2019 and 2020, Uber said it received 3,824 reports of the five most severe categories of sexual assault, which range from “non-consensual kissing of a non-sexual body part” to “non-consensual sexual penetration.”
So yeah, there’s a good reason to leave evidence. Women are more at risk and are vulnerable in those situations.
Lots of commenters shared their own stories of leaving evidence in taxis or rideshares. (And some of their stories are terrifying).
And then some comments added a few jokes, to lighten the mood of a VERY serious topic.
It’s definitely a depressing side of the time that women have to leave evidence in taxis (and post about it on TikTok). But here we are.
Here’s the video.
