Anti-memes—the memes for people whose brains have been melted by memes.
For nearly as long as there’s been comedy there’s been anti-comedy. These are jokes or performances that make you laugh by subverting your expectations of comedy is. One or all of the typical components of a joke—like the setup or the punchline—may be missing or replaced with pure absurdism. Think of Andy Kaufman getting on stage and simply playing a record of the Mighty Mouse theme while occasionally singing along.
Anti-comedy also exists in the meme world, where it turns the formulaic nature of memes on its head. Such “anti-memes” are often simply literal when the format has primed us to expect irony. You were expecting to laugh? Ha! Fat chance.
