Democrats Got Dunked On From All Sides For Wearing Traditional African Kente Cloth (20 Tweets)

On Monday, Congressional Democrats came under fire for their oddly conceived demonstration before a press conference announcing the new Justice in Policing Act. Wearing Kente cloth, the group kneeled at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, which is the length of time Officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on the neck of Minneapolis citizen George Floyd, killing him. Floyd’s murder has set off a revolutionary number of protests across America in every state, as he is just one of hundreds of Black people killed by police violence.

The Kente cloth was given to the Congresspeople, including Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden, by members of the Congressional Black Caucus. After the performative gesture was widely mocked on the Internet, the Caucus chairwoman Rep. Karen Bass told reporters, “The significance of the Kente cloth is our African heritage, and for those of you without that heritage who are acting in solidarity. That is the significance of the Kente cloth. Our origins and respecting our past.”

But others have been critical, like author Obianuju Ekeocha, who called it “virtue signaling.”

Most people just dunked on them again and again and again. And again. Here are the best of those reactions below:
