Tourist Sparks Outrage After Climbing Protected Mayan Pyramid

A viral video of a woman climbing Mexico’s protected Chichén Itzá pyramid has people outraged.

The video shared on TikTok shows the unidentified woman climbing up the steps and dancing as she reaches the top.

The woman was immediately followed by an apparent member of security for the protected pyramid.

The caption of the viral video reads: “This is so disrespectful… don’t mess with my Mexican people.”

The Mayan structure is a UNESCO world heritage site and although at one time, tourists were allowed on the pyramid, visitors have been prohibited from climbing it since 2008.

Her actions were met with boos from the crowd below, and as she was escorted away from the site, many were throwing water at her and chanting “lock her up” and “jail!”.
