Did you know that most of us have been incorrectly calculating our dog’s age this whole time? If you’re like me, you’ve always believed that 1 human year equals 7 dog years. So a dog who’s 1 in human years is 7 in dog years, a dog who’s 2 in human years is 14 in dog years, and so on. But according to the American Kennel Club, there’s more nuance to it than that.
It turns out a dog ages more rapidly in the first few years. A dog who’s 1 in human years is actually more like 15 in dog years. And a dog who’s 2 in human years is about 24 in dog years. Then their aging slows down. When a dog turns 3 in human years, they’re about 28 in dog years. This pattern continues for the rest of their life: 4 is 32, 5 is 36, 6 is 40, and so on. (Note: there’s a slight variation to this rule depending on the size of the dog — the big ones age quicker). The more ya know!
