Kim Kardashian Turned 40, Threw A Private Island Party, Pissed People Off, Got Meme’d (30 Memes)

It’s no secret that Kim Kardashian West and her entire family are sickeningly rich. That’s been a big part of their brand appeal over the years, because aspiring to be wealthy is a huge American past time. But things have changed. With the pandemic, unemployment has soared. People are separated from their families, unable to really travel or enjoy the simple pleasures of gathering together for parties or fun. If they do, they risk making themselves and people they love sick and possibly dead.

Plenty of people take that risk and coronavirus numbers are worse than ever. Some people don’t have a choice about risk because they need to hang onto the jobs they have. In this atmosphere, is it any wonder that Kim’s long post about her birthday on a private island set off a powder keg of resentment?

In a series of tweets, she wrote about how she treated some of her nearest and dearest to a trip to a private island for her 40th birthday. The most called out tweet said, “After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.”

The pictures do not convincingly argue that this is a safe scenario. There are a whole lot of people there, and no mention of the folks who are making this dream vacation happen for the rich:

Kim’s posts got ripped to shreds by people who haven’t seen their family all year or had any opportunity to pretend things are “normal.” A lot of people wondered how on earth Kim could have surprised everyone with a party like this and ensure they were quarantining and being tested. And many of us wondered why she would not only need to have the party, but would be so tone-deaf as to parade it online for everyone to see from their darkened bedrooms.

Pretty quickly, people started memeing the crap out of Kim’s tweet, showing their own version of a private island party. Stills from the film Parasite make frequent appearances:
