Phoebe Bridgers Opens Up About Going To Marilyn Manson’s House As A Teenager

Musician Phoebe Bridgers says she went to Marilyn Manson’s house with some friends several years ago, and was disgusted when he showed her his “r*ape room.”

Bridgers tweeted on Thursday in the midst of many women, including actor Evan Rachel Wood, coming forward to name Manson as their abuser.

“I went to Marilyn Manson’s house when I was a teenager with some friends,” the 26-year-old tweeted.  “I was a big fan. He referrred to a room in his house as the ‘r*ape room,’ I thought it was just his horrible frat boy sense of humor. I stopped being a fan.”

“I stand with everyone who came forward,” Bridgers added.

Bridgers also tweeted that Manson’s abusive behavior was no secret:

“The label knew, management knew, the band knew. Distancing themselves now, pretending to be shocked and horrified is f—ing pathetic.”

Though Wood has spoken out about abuse she endured in a past relationship, Monday was the first time she named Marilyn Manson as the person who abused her. She says that Manson tortured her throughout their relationship, which began when she was a teenager and he was in his thirties. Other survivors have also come forward with their stories.

Rose McGowan, who was engaged to Manson for two years before their split in 2001, tweeted Tuesday, “I stand with Evan Rachel Wood and other brave women who have come forward. It takes years to recover from abuse and I send them strength on their journey to recovery. Let the truth be revealed. Let the healing begin.”

She also tweeted, “the Cult of Hollywood, fame & the music industry must be stopped from protecting predators and selling their sickness to the world.”

Manson’s ex-wife, burlesque star Dita Von Teese, posted an oddly worded Instagram message (the use of the word “incurred” has troubled some people who believe that she means victims brought abuse upon themselves) that she had not been abused by Manson during their time together:

“Please know that the details do not match my personal experience during our 7 years together as a couple. Had they, I would not have married him in December 2005. I left 12 months later due to infidelity and drug abuse.”

“Abuse of any kind has no place in any relationship. I urge those of you who have incurred abuse to take steps to heal and the strength to fully realize yourself,” Von Teese added.

It should go without saying, but people seem to be willfully ignorant about how abusers function. Abusers do not abuse everybody they are in a relationship with. Because Von Teese says that Manson did not abuse her does not mean he did not abuse other women, including Wood.

Also, to say that a person should expect abuse when they date someone who looks like Manson does is straight-up victim blaming. Victims do not bring abuse upon themselves, they are not responsible for their abuse, and they are not psychic.
