In a candid interview with longtime friend James Corden on The Late Late Show With James Corden, Prince Harry spoke about his decision to leave life as a royal behind.
Harry, 36, talked about some of the reasons he and wife Meghan Markle decided to move to California and step back from their role in the royal family.
The interview comes just days after it was announced that the couple would not be returning to life as working royals.
“Following conversations with the duke,” the statement said, “the Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the royal family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.”
In the interview with Corden (which takes place on a double-decker bus) Harry explains that it was “never walking away, it was stepping back rather than stepping down.”
“It was a really difficult environment as I think a lot of people saw. We all know what the British press can be like. It was destroying my mental health.”
“This is toxic, so I did what any husband and what any father would do which is ‘I need to get my family out of here,’ but we never walked away,” Harry added.
“As far as I’m concerned, whatever decisions are made on that side, I will never walk away. I will always be contributing.”
“My life is always going to be about public service,” he said. “And Meghan signed up to that. The two of us enjoy doing that — trying to bring some compassion and trying to make people happy, and trying to change the world in whatever small way we can.”
Harry also took a moment to provide a look into what a typical day is for his family. He said that in the evening, Markle and he “do Archie’s tea, give him a bath, read him a book, put him down,” before doing what most couples do: ordering takeout and watching Netflix.
Meghan and Harry recently announced that they are expecting their second child. the news, which was shared on Valentine’s Day, comes after Meghan revealed she had suffered a miscarriage in July.
