The Academy announced this year’s Oscar nominations for 2020 and let’s just say that people aren’t exactly jumping for joy. In fact, people are having the feels—and the feels, to be precise, are somewhere between an eye roll and outrage. Like, guys, Beyoncé—and her incredible Lion King magic—didn’t make the damn cut! Is this a joke?
Is this, as Twitter is saying, yet another example of how mostly white and mostly male people are nominated for fancy awards? (Yes, yes it is).
The 92ND Academy Award nominations include a whole bunch of people, like Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Laura Dern, Cathy Bates, Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie…but there are also a lot of snubs.
Huge 2020 Academy Awards SNUBS:
• ‘The Farewell’
• ‘Uncut Gems’
• ‘Dolemite Is My Name’
• Jennifer Lopez (‘Hustlers’)
• Dir. Greta Gerwig (‘Little Women’)
• Lupita Nyong’o (‘Us’)
• Taron Egerton (‘Rocketman’)
• Willem Dafoe (‘Lighthouse’)
• ‘Frozen 2’
• ‘Apollo 11’ pic.twitter.com/reJfszXtve— DR Movie News (@DRMovieNews1) January 13, 2020

But let’s be real. The whole award ceremony is basically just one big advertisement for Joker.

And #NoJLo? What sort of alternate universe are we living in?
I need to rewatch Marriage Story so I can better understand why Laura Dern’s performance is award winning. I know I’m a biased @jlo fan and I like Dern but what the actual f*ck? #CriticsChoice pic.twitter.com/6A8SYkMQX1

Apparently, the kind of universe where this happens…
i can’t believe scarjo got away with two noms both in leading and supporting roles when lupita, awkwafina, zhao, jlo and many others were literally there pic.twitter.com/fCldqcL3XW

JLo is clearly superb and deserves to be recognized.
jlo could do joker but jaoquin couldn’t do hustlers

Wow…can’t believe Jennifer Lopez was snubbed. She legitimately deserved to win this thing. #OscarNoms #OscarsSoWhite pic.twitter.com/5w4xuIoC4n

A few thoughts on the Academy Award nominations:
-Nominating Todd Phillips for director instead of Greta Gerwig or Taika Waititi is probably some form of illegal
-Joker getting 11 nominations is worth an eye roll, but the academy wanted a “Popular” movie and it made a billion.

Just want to point out, the guy who made Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary just won an Academy Award for best picture. Literally anything is possible.

The Academy Awards are basically dumb, a bunch of morally vain entertainment insiders making annoying political decisions. They should give the Best Picture award to Forrest Gump every year to remind people it’s all hackery. But the business model of Hollywood works. Protect it.

Me: “Awards for art is dumb.”
“Yelling and being angry is the easiest type of acting and the Academy swoons for it every time. Boring.”
“not enough women and people of color are ever nominated.”

Everyone I know has the same review of Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. “Meh, it was good but not great” – it now has 10 academy award nominations. The Oscars are so dumb.

The Joker leading nominations with 11 tells you most of what you need to know about the 2020 Academy awards mess.
