He is working on the railroad while Russian soldiers with guns circle. There’s lots of snow. He is bald. This man has been through a lot!

When we last saw Hopper, he purportedly blew up or disintegrated into a pile of goo. But after the explosion, we were shown some intriguing footage of a prison in Kamchatka, Russia and some dialogue referencing “the American.”

Now, we can assume that Hopper was most likely “the American.” What we can also gather from the video is that he is building a railroad in Russia under duress with other prisoners.
The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, also provided some context.
“We’re excited to officially confirm that production on Stranger Things 4 is now underway—and even more excited to announce the return of Hopper! Although it’s not all good news for our ‘American’; he is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where he will face dangers both human… and other,” they wrote in a statement.
“Meanwhile, back in the States, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long buried, something that connects everything. Season 4 is shaping up to be the biggest and most frightening season yet, and we cannot wait for everyone to see more. In the meantime—pray for the American.”
Folks on social media were super stoked to see their favorite character confirmed alive.
