Woman’s Ground Beef Rinsing TikTok Went Viral And People Got Big Mad About It

Another day, another drama item coming right out of the TikTok cooking community. This time it’s in response to a user’s “kitchen tip.”

Emily Harper probably didn’t expect her video to cause such controversy when she innocently uploaded a video sharing a hack she learned in a nutrition class.

As a way to get rid of the excess grease, Harper took the browned ground beef into a colander and ran it under the sink for a few seconds.

When finished, she adds the beef back into the pan.

Within a week, the video received 4.6 million views and nearly 250k likes.

In a TikTok posted today, Harper showed how abusive TikTok users drove her to disable comments on her videos.

It’s ground beef, guys. Get some chill and stop attacking an innocent woman.

The video took on a life of its own via Twitter, where people weren’t much kinder.

Insider wanted to understand why people felt so strongly, so the publication interviewed Michelin-starred chef Brad Carter to get a professional’s perspective.

Carter — who owns Carters of Moseley in Birmingham, England — was a little more gentle than social media users.

“It’s obviously washing away flavor,” Carter told Insider. “It’s a real, real no-no for me. I would never, ever wash the meat.”

Carter goes on to explain why it’s not best practice to wash meat while cooking.

“At the end of the day, if you use top quality mince it’s not going to contain any water, it’s going to contain fat — and that’s because it’s meat and fat,” he said. “The cheaper the meat that you use, the more water that’s going to be involved. I would leave the fat in, the fat for me would be a big part of it.”

Insider also consulted with other professionals and learned the practice could spread bacteria throughout the kitchen and has potential to clog plumbing.

However, that does NOT mean Harper deserves any cruelty.
