Psychology says pacing during phone calls isn’t restlessness, it’s thinking with your whole body, because movement and speech share machinery and walking genuinely helps the words come
Pacing during a phone call looks, from the outside, slightly deranged.
The person doing laps of the parking lot with an earbud in. The coworker who takes every call standing, orbiting, wearing a route into the office carpet. Maybe you, circling the kitchen mid-conversation while someone on the couch watches you like a zoo exhibit.
And if you’re a pacer, you’ve probably absorbed the verdict without anyone saying it out loud. Restless. Fidgety. Can’t sit still like a normal person.
You may have even tried taking calls from a chair, like an adult, and noticed something strange: the sentences got harder to build.
That wasn’t your imagination. Speech and movement share machinery in the brain, the research on this is decades deep, and it starts somewhere you’d never expect: with people who have never seen a gesture in their lives.
Speaking is a whole-body act
In 1998, psychologists Jana Iverson and Susan Goldin-Meadow published a short paper in Nature about people blind from birth. These are speakers who have never once watched anyone move their hands during conversation. No model to copy, no habit to absorb.
They gestured anyway, at rates comparable to sighted speakers. And in the condition that settled the question, blind speakers gestured even when talking to a listener they knew was also blind. As the authors put it, gestures “require neither a model nor an observant partner.”
Think about what that means. Gesture isn’t learned decoration, and it isn’t communication garnish. It comes factory-installed with speech itself. Producing sentences is a physical act, and the body participates whether or not the movement accomplishes anything for anyone.
You’ve seen the evidence in yourself, actually. You gesture on the phone, at people who cannot see you, and it never once felt strange.
That’s not a quirk. That’s the machinery showing.
Hold still and the words come slower
If movement is part of producing speech, then blocking the movement should damage the speech. Researchers ran exactly that experiment.
Psychologists Frances Rauscher, Robert Krauss, and Yihsiu Chen had people describe animated cartoons, sometimes free to gesture, sometimes with their hands restrained. Published in Psychological Science, the results were blunt: with hands out of play, speech became measurably less fluent, and the rate of filled pauses climbed.
The ums. The uhs. The audible sound of a brain reaching for a word it can’t quite grab.
Tellingly, restraining gesture produced roughly the same signature as making word-retrieval harder by other means. The researchers’ explanation, known as the lexical retrieval hypothesis, is that movement helps prime the words themselves.
A later finding from Goldin-Meadow’s lab went further. People allowed to gesture while explaining math problems remembered more items on an unrelated memory task than people made to keep still. Moving didn’t spend mental resources. It freed them.
The chair was never the responsible choice. For word-finding, stillness has a price.
Walking gives the words a running start
Now scale up from hands to legs, because Stanford did, and the numbers are hard to argue with.
In four experiments, researchers Marily Oppezzo and Daniel Schwartz compared people’s thinking while seated versus walking. On idea-generation tasks, walking increased creative output by an average of 60 percent, with 81 percent of participants improving.
It wasn’t the fresh air. Walking on an indoor treadmill facing a blank wall worked too. “Walking on a treadmill in a small, boring room still had strong results,” Oppezzo admitted, surprised by her own data. The movement itself was doing the work.
And the boost lingered after people sat back down, like an engine that stays warm.
A phone call is talking on hard mode
Which brings us to why this all comes out during calls, specifically.
Face to face, a conversation has help everywhere. Facial expressions carry half the meaning. Pauses get covered by a look. You can point at things. On a call, all of that is gone, and everything you want the other person to understand has to be converted into words, retrieved and assembled in real time, for as long as the call lasts.
That’s the most sustained word-production task in ordinary life. It’s also exactly the operation the research says movement supports.
So the body volunteers what it has. The hands gesture, because gesture ships with speech. The legs add the walking boost to a task that’s word-finding from start to finish. And walking costs nothing to run, because it’s the most overlearned motor skill you own, fully automatic, leaving your working memory undisturbed while the rest of you talks.
Sitting down for a long call means doing the hardest verbal task of your day with part of the machinery switched off. The pacing isn’t the malfunction. The chair is.
Pace the brainstorm, sit for the fine print
One honest boundary, because the Stanford data draws it cleanly.
Walking supercharged the generating kind of thinking: ideas, options, ways to phrase a hard thing. On tasks with a single correct answer, only 23 percent of participants improved, and tight precision work can fare slightly worse mid-stride.
The call version writes itself. Pace the brainstorm, the catch-up, the conversation where you’re feeling for the right words. Sit for the contract review, the number-checking, the fine print.
And one distinction worth keeping: this is about movement that helps. Pacing you can’t stop when you’re desperate for stillness is a different pattern, usually about anxiety, and it deserves its own conversation.
But the ordinary version, the laps around the kitchen while you talk something through?
Blind speakers who’ve never seen a gesture still make them. Restrained hands make words come slower. Walking made four experiments’ worth of people measurably better at exactly what a phone call demands.
