CHAZ memes are taking over the internet just like some protesters took over a few blocks in Seattle.
What is CHAZ?
The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone or “CHAZ” is a roughly six-block area of Seattle that has been claimed by protestors as an independently governed space for about a week.
At its heart is a police precinct that was abandoned during the Black Lives Matter protests that broke out after the death of George Floyd. After sometimes violent clashes, the police withdrew from the area and protestors took the space over. According to the latest reports out of Seattle, the CHAZ has been renamed the CHOP (Capitol Hill Occupied Protest).
It’s a bold, idealistic, and probably largely symbolic experiment. And because it’s being run by humans it’s also rife with contradictions and threatens to quickly become the thing it seeks to oppose: an authoritarian state run by force.
And where there is contradiction, self-satisfaction, or even a whiff of hypocrisy to mock…there are CHAZ memes (or CHOP memes, if you prefer).
Some of these CHAZ memes celebrate the CHAZ, some mock the CHAZ, and some simply react to the CHAZ in all its sudden and confusing glory.
