Toddlers and babies are tough, because all they want to do it put stuff that shouldn’t go in their mouths immediately into their mouths. They’re figuring out the world and part of that involves eating stuff off the floor. That’s probably why people have gone completely gaga over this “Cheerio sand” made by mom and TikTok user @elleannachristine, who shared her technique for making safe, edible dirt on her feed.
The short video shows all her steps for producing what Buzzfeed reports is “sensory play,” or any kind of game or activity that stimulates their sense. Playing in regular sand would count, but the Cheerios are tapping into taste in a whole new way.

The steps are simple enough, but it’s still cool to see them from start to finish, as some dry cereal turns in hours of fun.
First, she puts a whole bunch of Cheerios into a NutriBullet and grinds them to dust:
Then she puts them in a pan along with some fun beach toys that I am assuming have been washed since they were at the actual beach:
Then she places the pan and the baby somewhere it’s okay to make a mess and lets her have a very fun time eating sand, as babies love to try and do. Only this time it’s safe, because no seagulls have pooped in it:
I will say that this process brought up some questions for me, specifically, “What happens when the baby is brought to the beach or a sandbox?”
I guess they’ll discover the difference between Cheerio sand and regular sand, but will that be confusing? And won’t it involve eating regular sand?
Maybe most moms know that stopping your babies form eating sand is a losing battle anyway, because other moms do this as well, like TikToker @mamabee2012:

Okay, three is a trend. And if you want to get real fancy, may I suggest grinding up some Lucky Charms and making rainbow sand?
