Some people shop for Halloween costumes last minute at Spirit or Target—and then there’s Stephanie Pokorny, who crochets Halloween costumes for her kids.
The talented designer and mom from Cleveland, Ohio learned to crochet when she was 16, and now her designs are in high demand for the holiday season.
“When I got pregnant with my first son, I was like, called to make things for him, so I picked it back up,” Pokorny told Insider. “From there, it just kind of bloomed into just wanting to make everything for my kids.”
“I dedicated September to making this year’s costumes, and each one took me a period of two weeks, so probably somewhere right around 40 or 50 hours for each one,” she said.
Pokorny says her kids understand how much effort she puts into each costume, and they have to be confident about their choice.
“They definitely have to be sure what they want to be because once we start, there’s no turning back.”
Pokorny helps support her family not by selling the completed costumes, but by selling the crochet patterns she designs.
“It’s difficult because unfortunately in today’s day and age, sometimes people don’t value the time that it takes,” Pokorny said. “They say, ‘Hey, I can get this hat at Walmart for five bucks. Why the heck am I gonna pay you $40?’ The people who buy my patterns, which I love, they get to use my work—which they purchased from me and supports my family—to then sell their completed items and support their families, so I totally love that.”
