A Reddit user is wondering if she took things too far when she called her father a “hypocritical whore.” So she asked the subreddit r/AmItheA**hole.
The user said the incident happened a few years ago and that she is currently in her 30s. As a child, she was a daddy’s girl, however, she said he began treating her differently once she became a teenager. She noticed the same trend with him and her siblings and nieces/nephews.
“He loves kids and doting on them but can’t relate to teens so he doesn’t try,” she wrote. “He wasn’t mean but he seemed to go from loving to uncaring out of nowhere. So our relationship suffered terribly during my teen years and into my 20’s. Only recently have things mellowed out.”
Those teen years were formative for OP, as she learned who her father really was.
“But as a teen I started understanding the stuff the adults would say about my dad. Eavesdropping I found out my dad was a habitual cheater and cheated on my mom almost constantly thru their marriage. He’d run off with various women after he got paid from work. He’d party, blow his money on booze and concerts while leaving mom home with three kids. She eventually divorced him.”
Finding out her dad’s “history” changed how she viewed her dad.
During this time, OP also started experimenting with makeup, which didn’t go over well with her dad. The first time he saw her in makeup he called her a “harlot” and continued to call her names like “floozy” and “corner worker.” After a while, OP reached her breaking point.
“I know he was saying it jokingly most of the time but it still pissed me off. But one day in my late 20’s my family and I were all going out to eat together and it was casual so I wore a cute mini dress (and had a cropped jean jacket to go over it). But when I got out of my car and approached my family my dad made a comment about my dress, saying I looked like a hooker.
I was so mad but I didn’t want to ruin the evening so I just laughed and said ‘C’mon Dad you’re being a little hypocritical, out of the two of us you’re the bigger whore since you’ve slept with every woman in the tri-state area.'”
It went over well with the rest of the family, not so much with daddy-o.
Recently, OP was speaking with her sister on the event and her sister said she was the asshole in the situation. OP doesn’t believe so and wanted Reddit’s thoughts.
User zwergschnauzer said:
“NTA. Great comeback. His ongoing comments to you are a form of abuse; that coupled with his behavior suggests he might be the biggest asshole in the tri-state area as well.”
The majority of the comments sided with OP and pointed out her father’s abusive tendencies.
“NTA – if he cant handle being called a whore maybe he shouldnt be calling his OWN DAUGHTER a whore,” said awholeunit.
“NTA and shows how he views women really. Massive congrats on calling him out on it!” princessandthepotato wrote.
In the comments, OP mentioned that her father has not made a single comment about her clothes or makeup since.
