Boss Told Employee And New Dad To Consider Where He Really Wanted To Be And It Backfired

Have you ever had a boss try to lob that classic chestnut “think about if you want to be here” at you?

Mine was actually an acting teacher and it stung. Y’all, I cried. Of course I wanted to be there! I wanted to be good at this!

But given the benefit of like, ten years and age, wt actual f? Who says that to someone and why on earth didn’t BabyKate turn around and go — NOPE. I shouldn’t be paying for that!

Redditor u/iBeJoshhh recently posted a story on the Antiwork subreddit on Twitter that lives my comeuppance for me. Let’s read:

3 months ago, I started a job at a warehouse, as a lead. My direct supervisor was on vacation when I was hired, So I didn’t meet her until 2 weeks after starting, and I wish I never did.

Before being hired I told them I would need to take paternity leave in about 6 weeks, which they agreed was fine(will make sense later on).

He explains that he started a new job as a warehouse lead and needed paternity leave in six weeks, which was fine. He also didn’t meet his supervisor until a few weeks after he started.

It doesn’t go well when he finally does meet her.

I could tell my supervisor didn’t like me, she was doing all this petty, Nitpicking stuff. Like not inviting me to operation meetings, complaining I wasn’t in my department when I stepped out to go to the bathroom, saying my department numbers where to low, or giving me unrealistic goals to hit, and my favorite of them all, Taking too long on breaks. We get two 15 minutes breaks, And I always go out with the associates, and return in with them, But she told me I needed to be back on the floor BEFORE THEM.

OP explains that the supervisor was super nitpicky and difficult — the relationship didn’t start off on the right foot and it never got there.

I would of had no issues going out 5 minutes before them and coming in 5 minutes before, But I wasn’t going to lose 5+ minutes of my break for a 12 hour day. And this was the first time hearing I needed to be in before them.

Before OP left on his paternity leave, she tried to lower the number of days off. OP said nope.

So before going on paternity leave, which she was NOT happy about at all she tried to make me only take 3 days off, which I politely declined, and said I would be taking the 5 weeks I was approved for.

So I had a meeting a few days before leaving with her, and she told me, “While on paternity leave, you need to figure out if this is the place you want to be, and if it is, you need to straighten up your attitude” and other things along those lines.

And then she lobbed the stupid “figure out if this is the place you want to be” line at OP. So… he did it. He took her advice.

Well, I took her advice, I don’t want to be there, and become as miserable and she is. So I looked for new jobs while I was on leave, and recently accepted a new job with a $5/H pay bump, and way better benefits. My paternity leave ends on the 29th of this month, and I start my new job on the 28th. I bet she will not be happy when I don’t come in.

So tired of upper management thinking they have a noose around their employees necks, and they won’t go anywhere.

While he was on leave, he found a new job with better pay and benefits. He’s quitting.
