Mia spoke with BuzzFeed about the experience.

She said, “After reading a few symptoms he immediately ran out to my roommate to see if hers was the same. After about a minute of collectively freaking out with my roommate’s boyfriend, I began recording [their reactions]!”

The men were totally dumbfounded that the different kinds of birth control also come with different side effects.

It is fair to point out that the list of side effects is so long because the pharmaceutical companies have to make sure they covered everything… for legal reasons. Not everyone will experience any or all of the symptoms. However, women still know that these are the risks.

For most women, birth control is safe and effective. But you never know. If you do experience symptoms, it’s important to speak with your doctor to make sure you have the correct form of birth control and you’re on the right dose. And, of course, men AND women should be entirely aware of the side effects of birth control.

“The most common side effects that people worry about are weight gain, acne, nausea, and mood side effects,” Dr. Jessica Ritch, a gynecologist in Hollywood, Florida, told BuzzFeed.

She noted, however, that weight gain is usually small and stabilizes. Acne also improves.

So yeah, there’s a risk with taking birth control. It shouldn’t be all that shocking.
