An apartment renter recently discovered her name hadn’t been on her lease for the entirety of her 4-year residence. How one could go four years in an undocumented apartment without any questions is yet to be determined. However, TikTok user Alyssa (alyssaannaaa) experienced the shock nonetheless.
Sometimes apartment complexes go through a problematic amount of management changes within a small timeframe. During these transitional periods, documents can easily be misplaced or lost. This could be what happened in Alyssa’s case. In her viral video, she said, “I just went down to the leasing office to talk to them because I’m leaving. They told me I’m not even on the lease.”
My initial thought after seeing the video was, “Where has all of her rent been going?” I wasn’t the only one with this revelation. Viewers in the comment section urged Alyssa to get in contact with a lawyer and get all of her money back. According to some, this is good advice. However, it’s bad news for the accountant who’s been brushing off ‘X’ amount of money for the past 4 years.
“I signed a lease 4 years ago. I don’t know who’s on the lease.” Alyssa said. She alleged that her apartment refused her any information, as they probably assumed at the time that she was some type of hustler. Paraphrasing her leasing staff, she continued, “They were like, ‘yeah, we can’t give you any information…” To which Alyssa responded, “What do you mean? That’s not my problem!”
Alyssa’s revelation that she had not been on the lease for 4 years racked in 1 million views.
The TikToker was encouraged by her viewers to find a copy of her old lease so that she could prove she had been on one for the past 4 years. However, according to Alyssa’s multiple responses, she has no clue where the document is. Other viewers offered legal advice and some even shared similar stories.
As of today, Alyssa hasn’t quite figured out the answer to her problem. Many suggested that she stay at the residency for as long as she can. Hopefully without having to pay any more rent. Has something like this ever happened to you? We’d like to know!
