Rapper T.I. sent off an internet sh*tstorm yesterday when he revealed in an interview that he accompanies his 18-year-old daughter to the gynecologist to get confirmation from the doctor that her hymen is intact and that she still has her virginity.
…TI done lost his goddamn mind. Talking about he goes to the gynecologist w/ his 18 yr old daughter to make sure she’s still a virgin and her hymen is still in tact. What the fuck is this man on?! pic.twitter.com/SNQLQSi4DP

As many pointed out, many virgins don’t have hymens, and many people with hymens aren’t virgins, so T.I.’s pseudoscientific approach is flat-out ignorant along with being very creepy and controlling behavior to exhibit towards his adult daughter. You can add sexist to that as the rapper said, unlike his daughter, he doesn’t care that his son has sex.
TI let’s his 15 yr old son manage his own sex life. He was proud his son wasn’t a virgin anymore.
Why does he feel the need to micromanage when his 18 yr old daughter’s sexuality? 18!
Being a concerned about a child’s health isn’t the issue.

Now the heavyweights of reproductive rights and education, Planned Parenthood, have waded into the controversy on Twitter to help set the record straight.
Without mentioning the rapper by name, Planned Parenthood not-so-subtly addressed the topic in a series of tweets that began with “Idk who needs to hear this but…”
Idk who needs to hear this but virginity is a made-up social construct, and it has absolutely nothing to do with your hymen.
— Planned Parenthood (@PPFA) November 6, 2019
After explaining that virginity is a social construct, PP went on to explain why hymens aren’t actually evidence of anything.
A virgin is someone who’s never had sex. But “sex” means different things to different people, so “virginity” does too. Many don’t care what it means or think it matters. Whatever you believe, the fact is you can’t tell if someone’s had sex by checking their hymen.

First, the organization offered some basic anatomy lessons for the class.
The hymen is a thin, fleshy tissue that’s located at the opening of your vagina. Like other parts of our bodies, hymens are a little different for everyone.
— Planned Parenthood (@PPFA) November 6, 2019
Then they cleared up some misinformation.
Many people think the hymen totally covers the opening of your vagina until it’s stretched open, but that’s not usually the case. Most hymens naturally have a hole big enough for period blood to come out and for you to use tampons comfortably.
— Planned Parenthood (@PPFA) November 6, 2019
And dispelled some myths.
Some people just naturally have hymens that are more open. And many other activities besides sex can stretch your hymen — like riding a bike, doing sports, or putting something in your vagina (like a tampon or finger). Once your hymen is stretched open, it can’t grow back.

One more time for the people in the back.
Some people think you can tell if someone’s had sex before if their hymen is stretched open. But that’s not the case.
