What Is OnlyFans?
Since COVID-19 hit, a lot of work has become remote or ended completely. People are having to figure out how to make money from home real fast and they’re leaning on technology to do it. Like everyone else, folks in the sex work industry have been hit pretty hard. There’s no more strip clubs, no more escorts, no more porn shoots. But there is hope. There is…OnlyFans.
OnlyFans has existed since 2016, according to an article in the New York Times published in 2019. That article was about how OnlyFans has changed pornography, because it absolutely has. The easiest comparison is that it’s Patreon for porn. Anyone can sign up, post content on their OnlyFans page, and charge a monthly subscription rate for others to view it.
People subscribe directly to the content made by their favorite creators. Sometimes they’re subscribing to people who make hardcore porn, sometimes they’re subscribing to people who post lingerie pics or foot videos.
Basically, whatever you’re into, you can find that special someone on there.
That’s why OnlyFans has (until now) been especially popular amongst queer people who find more varied bodies and sexual dynamics than on the most well-know porn sites focused on heteronormative sex. But now everyone is home and hopping on making OnlyFans accounts. More people are hearing about it. And more people are asking what the hell it is:
I’ve been seeing these tweets about ‘only fans’ and people making money off it.

What is onlyfans and why is it so popular recently?

Um, it’s popular because people are horny! And broke! And honestly, why not give money directly to the people who are making stuff you like? Porn star Dannii Harewood was one of the people interviewed by NYT about how she makes her money on OnlyFans. She was on the site almost from the beginning and is convinced it’s the personalized aspect of OnlyFans that makes it a big sell.
“You can get porn for free,” she said. “Guys don’t want to pay for that. They want the opportunity to get to know somebody they’ve seen in a magazine or on social media. I’m like their online girlfriend.”
Last November she made $52,760.49, increasing up from the month before. I can’t imagine what she’s making now, but I’m sure she’s giving people what they need and getting paid what she deserves for it.
