Right now, our constant companions are mainly whatever is around us in the house. Yes, I have been talking to my coffee maker and yes, we ARE in a fight. You might get absolutely sick of your surroundings by the time this is all over, but writer Isaac Fitzgerald started an object appreciation thread on Twitter, in which he encouraged people to think about what in their home is most meaningful to them (besides friends or family, duh):
Given that we’re all going to be inside for a minute…
What’s the object in your home that means the most to you?

He shared his own story of a small sword he was given by the King of Bhutan, which sounds too specific to be made up:
I’ll go first. This is a (small) sword given to me by the King of Bhutan over a decade ago. pic.twitter.com/q8O75PRtG9

Right after I was given the sword, a Bhutanese man who I’d befriended recently leaned in close to me and whispered, “Just for the record, this doesn’t make you a knight.”

Some of the responses are as mythic as a sword from a king, some are stories about stuffed animals that have had all the fur loved off of them. All conjure up special memories of people, experiences, and other times, reminding us of everything we value in life. Connecting to these simple things is what we need to do right now. Read through and think about everything special to you right now:

This little doll, made by my favorite artist, Edward Gorey. I bought it in the nineties, even though I was dirt poor and couldn’t afford it pic.twitter.com/ud8vgrN0PA

there are three things here actually. this is my grandfather’s marine-issued coffee cup that went with him to the pacific theater of wwII. it sits atop one of his old cigar boxes, and inside that is his marine ID bracelet. it’d grab this and the cat in a fire tbh. pic.twitter.com/lCHY4VLPlK

Framed menu my grandmother grabbed from one of her earliest dates with my grandfather, at The Paramount. 60 odd years later I ended up working across the street, sheer coincidence, as we were not New Yorkers! Love the prices and (now) classic cocktails—only 83 cents, ha. pic.twitter.com/ehDSNHXO5j
