There’s nothing like being a woman with a body in public. Just existing is enough to make random people think they can comment on the meat suit you’re walking around in. And if you’re on TV?! Forget it, everyone thinks they have a right to weigh in on your clothes and body-shame you over your weight. Despite knowing this from personal experience, I am still sometimes shocked by what people will say and do to a lady on the TV.
Kori Sidaway is a Canadian news reporter for CHEK News, LAD Bible reports. This week, she posted on Twitter about how she and her team were sent emails criticizing her clothes. Why? Because of her cleavage.
This screenshot was sent to me and my colleagues in an attempt to shame and police my body. Well, I’m taking my power back.
To the nameless computer warrior(s) who try to reduce women into an outfit or a body part — this generation of women, doesn’t stand for harassment👩🏼🤝👩🏻✌🏻 pic.twitter.com/fgGySbVTYy

She shared a screenshot of the email, captioning it, “This screenshot was sent to me and my colleagues in an attempt to shame and police my body. Well, I’m taking my power back. To the nameless computer warrior(s) who try to reduce women into an outfit or a body part – this generation of women, doesn’t stand for harassment.”
The email reads: “Breaking News: too much cleavage can break your news story.”
It continued, “Don’t let it happen to you. Episode. 6 Sunday 5-7 pm. Attached are two photos. What you think we see and what we actually see. Dress appropriately. It was hard work to get there. Thanks. Vancouver Island Cleavage Patrol.”
Hmm, something makes me think that’s not an officially recognized Vancouver police force. Can you imagine being such a perv that you send women screenshots of their own breasts with a timestamp? Of course you can, because the world is full of pervs. Still, people were extremely angry on Sidaway’s behalf and some even had similar experiences:
So wrong. And to think I was going to send you a message complementing on the beautiful necklace that you were wearing. Some people just suck. So sorry you had to be subjected to this kind of hatred. You are beautiful, and professional!

Thank you for speaking out. This crappy behaviour needs to be shut down as soon as possible. I’m sorry you have to deal with this. And thank you for the awesome job you do @CHEK_News

Some viewers believe they are entitled to say whatever they like to you, especially the cowards who do it anonymously. Don’t give them a second thought.

You go, girl! Good for you! When the email popped up on my phone last night my son was shocked people would actually send us messages like that! And it seems to be getting worse. Pretty sure male anchors aren’t subject to this kind of harassment.

Hey Kori @korisidaway, whether on the scene gathering a story, or telling it on TV, you demonstrate the height of professionalism, imho. That the objectification of women in general, & female journalists in particular, served up as helpful advice, persists,is deeply disappointing.

Good for you for speaking out about an experience all too common for female broadcasters. As a TV journalist, I’ve been criticized for not matching up to how people “think” women on TV should look. I’ve been called ugly, ‘not feminine enough’, etc. It is never acceptable.

I have a friend who works as an on air meteorologist in the states and some of the emails and messages that she gets to her invoices are appalling. I don’t understand why viewers think that they have the right to police what women wear on air. I’m sorry this happened to you.

I got an anonymous handwritten letter delivered to my network two weeks ago saying “decent men don’t want to see your ‘low cut tops.’ It shows poor taste in character. Hope you come to your senses and stick to doing your job.” I hate to hear it’s happening across Canada 😡😡

She thanked everyone for the outpouring of support:
Well this kind of blew up…Thank you all for sharing your own stories & kind words. I feel so much less alone, so supported and so much more empowered. You helped take my lemon and made lemonade 🍋 💛 Thank you.
