We all tell ourselves that we eventually grow past middle and high school memories. Who cares if you weren’t in the cool clique? Who cares that you didn’t get hot until college or possibly never? We’ve all forgotten the random hierarchies of our teen years. Or have we??
Writer Lizzie Logan stirred a lot of memories for people when she casually reflected on one of the signature talents of the popular girls, tweeting, “When I say popular girl handwriting we all know what that looks like right?”
Okay, I’m triggered. I can see the lines of gel pens and smell the fruity lip gloss like I’m sitting in homeroom reading a note over someone’s shoulder. Help! I’ll never be a popular girl!
when i say popular girl handwriting we all know what that looks like right?

This was a common reaction. Pretty much everyone conjured the same mental image of the round letters, perfect placement, and crisp lines, all finished with an exclamation point dotted with a heart.
A few more examples. It's the type of writing where all of the letters are the same size and letters like "n" and "h" will often look the same, because they don't write the stalks and loops on letters, they keep it even pic.twitter.com/oZg504027O

Lol this was my handwriting in 8th/9th grade 😂 And then the note taking had to be hustled and it all went downhill from there. So now it looks like this: pic.twitter.com/nnHkaasQv8

Some people were immediately able to imitate it:

And there were a large number of people who came forward as popular girls, either currently or formerly, who came forward with their handwriting samples:

Yeah why is that a thing?? I’ve never seen my dad write in lowercase. He’s about to be 80.

Though other people seem to know that they definitely aren’t:

Many more felt personally victimized by the popular girls and their handwriting, as well as baffling. How do they all know what to do when they put their pen to the paper?

I definitely practiced mine. Granted, that could be attributed to my neuroses and type A personality.

One very interesting thing that came up on the thread was that the credits in the film Legally Blonde look like “popular girl handwriting,” and a commenter claiming to have actually penned them claims the direction they were given the directive “popular cheerleader girl handwriting.”
THANK YOU!
I was hired to hand write those credits for Legally Blonde. My direction indeed was, “Popular cheerleader girl handwriting.”— moxietroubles (@moxietrouble) September 19, 2020
Thank you! Being a punk girl in a cheerleader world paid off eventually. 😂

To the popular girls, I’d like to say you peaked with your handwriting, but clearly you are all still living rent-free in our heads.
