Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, blue checkmarks have been a controversial issue.

The verified symbols have been used to denote people who are noteworthy in the arts, politics, and media, but some have called the badge “elitist.”
In response, Musk has rolled out a new system where, if you subscribe to Twitter Blue, you can have your own blue checkmark for $8 a month.

But what about the people who had Twitter blue checkmarks in the pre-Musk era? Well, there’s been a change in the way those are portrayed, too.

Recently people have noticed that a new blue check disclaimer states: “This is a legacy verified account. The user may or may not be notable.”
First off, ouch for bands like Nickelback.

But also, it’s hit some Twitter blue checkmarks who are still very much notable. Like, for example, a former president.

And another one.

And a third one (well, at least his library).

And one of the world’s most popular writers.

Not to mention a former first lady and secretary of state.

Even current government officials like Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, got it.

So did current U.S. Representative Katie Porter.

Some notable Hollywood liberals like Rob Reiner and Bette Midler also got the “may or may not be notable” treatment.
