Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, blue checkmarks have been a controversial issue.

The verified symbols have been used to denote people who are noteworthy in the arts, politics , and media, but some have called the badge “elitist.”

But what about the people who had Twitter blue checkmarks in the pre-Musk era? Well, there’s been a change in the way those are portrayed, too.

Recently people have noticed that a new blue check disclaimer states: “This is a legacy verified account. The user may or may not be notable.”
First off, ouch for bands like Nickelback.

But also, it’s hit some Twitter blue checkmarks who are still very much notable. Like, for example, a former president.
@BarackObama
And another one.
@BillClinton
And a third one (well, at least his library).
@TheBushCenter
And one of the world’s most popular writers.
@StephenKing
Not to mention a former first lady and secretary of state.
@HillaryClinton
Even current government officials like Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, got it.
@PeteButtigieg
So did current U.S. Representative Katie Porter.
@RepKatiePorter
Some notable Hollywood liberals like Rob Reiner and Bette Midler also got the “may or may not be notable” treatment.

@bettemidler
Naturally, people are ripping on it, since it is, in fact, something Elon did, which seems to be default stupid.
Apparently, the French translation is even more passive-aggressive:
Musk has definitely been expressing some more conservative viewpoints lately, like calling for Dr. Anthony Fauci to be prosecuted .
But who knows? Maybe these folks just haven’t paid their $8 for Twitter Blue. And Musk definitely has some bills to pay . Guess we’ll see more Twitter blue checkmarks for sale in the future.
