Couple Asks Wedding Guests To Help Pay For Reception In Lieu Of Gifts, Stirring Up Wedding Etiquette Debate

Weddings are expensive. The average wedding in 2023 cost $35,000 — a staggering amount to pay for a single day of festivities. To help ease the burden, one couple came up with an interesting solution: they asked each guest to pay for their own $40 meal ($20 for kids) instead of purchasing a wedding gift.

The idea had the internet divided. Some praised the frugal move, stating that wedding gifts are often unnecessary and guests typically shell out far more than $40 for that boujee candleholder or handcrafted spurtle set. But others thought the couple’s request was downright corny.
