The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards have been delighting animal lovers worldwide for the last four years. The funniest animal photos submitted from around the globe showcase the diversity of the Earth’s creatures while revealing just how human-like they can be.
Well, the day has finally arrived. Judges narrowed submissions down to 40 of the funniest animal photos, and on Wednesday, November 13 revealed the Overall Winner of the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards 2019. That honor goes to Sarah Skinner, whose photo “Grab life by the….!” depicts a lion cub, paws outspread, about to inflict some serious pain on the genitals of the male lion in front of him.
Life. It really do be like that sometimes.
Paul Joynson-Hicks and Tom Sullam, the founders of the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards, explain that their ultimate goal is education and conservation.
“The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards, ingeniously titled to avoid any confusion, was the result of two factors: Firstly, a need for a photography competition that was light-hearted, upbeat, possibly unpretentious and mainly about wildlife doing funny things,” states their website.
“Secondly, and way more importantly, this competition is about conservation. We want you to take up our banner of wildlife conservation, bang the drum, beat the cymbal and make some noise, we need to spread the word–wildlife, as we know it, is in danger, all over the world and we need to do something to help save it. You can start by going and having a look at what the Born Free Foundation are doing at www.bornfree.org.uk.”
They recommend shopping sustainably, using less water and plastics overall, and becoming a “wild influencer”—talking to friends and family about animal conservations—as a starting point for becoming a good conservationist.
