An Interracial Couple’s Photoshoot In A Cotton Field Is Getting The Reaction You’d Expect

No one knows what goes on between two people except them, so I’m hesitant to cast judgment on this interracial couple getting dragged on Twitter for their photoshoot in a cotton field. But Twitter user Pat Harrington definitely is not. It’s unclear where Harrington got the photos, but he posted three of them along with the face of judgment to Twitter, captioning them all with, “In a cotton field?”

The first two pics are kinda just normal couple photos, hugging and kissing. Except in a cotton field:

Just normal couple stuff…in a cotton field:

But the third picture takes it into much, much stranger territory. He gestures with a ball of cotton as she appears to choke him:

Maybe it doesn’t need to be said, but why not: many enslaved people were forced to work on plantations that produced cotton, especially after the development of the cotton mill. We all still wear cotton, so it obviously grows across the U.S., but for many Black Americans it is a symbol of oppression and a reminder of the horrors of slavery that still haven’t been confronted the way they should be in this country. There’s not really a way to make cotton plants an “aesthetic” without that history attached to it.

So, yeah, it’s weird to have your love recorded in a cotton field. I’d think it was weird if they were both white, too. Or both Black. There’s actually no combination of people I can imagine this not being weird for, but here we are.

People had a lot to say about the young Black man who agreed to participate in this scene:

Maybe the biggest lesson to take away from this is to double and triple check your social media accounts are on lockdown before posting any photos, because someone WILL find them and will make your question everything in your life after they get posted to Twitter.
