Browsing house listings is a fun pastime for many, because it’s fun to imagine yourself living a different life in a new place and that you can afford a house. Every once in awhile a listing is so freaky it gets shared on the Internet and everyone is baffled by why there’s a fake basement town or something. Still, nothing has given me chills like this listing under the name “c.1875 Move-in Ready Howard County Sheriffs House And Jail in Fayette MO $350,000.”
I realize some will say that reading that should have let me know what to expect after looking at the pictures, but I disagree. It’s so much creepier to see than a handful of words can describe.
First, there’s the very regular looking kitchen that you might see in any suburban dwelling:
But what’s that behind door number two? It appears to be a second door, one with a peephole and a lock.
And when you walk through that door…there’s literally a whole jail:
The beautiful red brick facade has barred windows. Jail style:
The front of the property has a sign noting this is a historical property, meaning this place has been a jail for a long time:
Now, I’m not superstitious, but if there’s a place that’s haunted by bad vibes and vile deeds, it’s this jailhouse.
The pictures started circulating online a lot after Twitter user @Kamtheleo tweeted the listing out, writing, “So, I wondered why a house with this amount of square footage only had 2 BR and 2 BA, but then I followed directions and scrolled through all the pics and what the f*ck????!!!”

This house goes from “Beginning of 2020” to “2020 after April” between pics 30 and 32. 😂😂😂

And let me be clear for those who are like, “wElL iT sAyS iT’s a jAiL iN tHe dEsCrIpTiOn…” yes, I read it, but STILL WAS NOT READY FOR THE PICS AFTER THE KITCHEN WTH??? 😂😂😂

And that was pretty much the response across the board. Because while it might be reasonable for a jailhouse to have a space for staff instead of people being detained, it is bizarre to have an underground bunker home nestled inside a functional jail. And yes, the description does imply the nine jail cells still work and can be used for…whatever:
WAIT until you get to picture #30!! 1875 Howard County Sheriff’s House and Jail. Extremely unique opportunity!! Extensive renovation in 2005 (supposedly $1.5 million) captures modern high end finishes with traditional architecture and character. This home is 2465 sq ft with three levels of living area, 2 bedroom. 1.5 bath, high end finish throughout, appears to have been totally rewired, replumbed and new HVAC zoned system installed. AND THE BEST PART, connected to the home is a 2500 sq ft legitimate jail with 9 cells, booking room and 1/2 bath. The cell door lock throws appear to be operational. Full basement under the home with lighting throughout. Possibilities are amazing with this property.
Call me paranoid, but if an ordinary civilian needs nine jail cells for anything I am not going over to their house. Though reactions were all over the place:
“Possibilities are amazing.” No, possibilities are fucking terrifying

Okay, this only adds to its appeal as a potential party venue IMO — probably not going to get a lot of noise complaints from next door no matter how loud the music gets?

I’m used to costal CA prices & my reaction was “only 350K AND it comes with a haunted jail?!” If the “updates” to the main house interior hadn’t been done by a flipper, it would be a real winner.

Some people claim to have been in the house and they don’t seem to think it’s a big deal:
I’m reading all these tweets and cracking up. I’ve cleaned this place at night annnndddd held meetings there.

It’s hilarious as a listing for home, tho, y’all! Home and attached jail?! Hysterical!

Hey, once you’re comfortable with the jailhouse, it’s already too late.
