All of us like to think that we know and understand the world around us, and especially when it comes to the people in our lives. We like to think we’d be brave if a situation called for it, or that we’d be able to see warning signs way off in the distance if a friend or loved one was having a hard time. 

But a recent AskReddit thread by u/Ryfi12 revealed that this is not always the case. And that when it comes to sociopaths (which many serial killers and murderers are), it’s nearly impossible to tell when a smiling and calm demeanor is actually harboring violent and murderous behavior. “Ex-Friends of a Serial Killer What Were They Like?” they asked earlier this week.
