Living in an apartment comes with the fear that at any moment, maintenance workers can come knocking at your door unannounced…or just walk right in. The proper procedure for maintenance is that they knock first, and if there’s no answer, they’re typically supposed to return at a later time.
I once woke up in my bed to a maintenance man standing on a stool and checking an air filter on my ceiling. Needless to say, I was pretty surprised. After my chat with management, that didn’t happen again. The action itself should never have taken place, but I’m grateful my experience wasn’t quite as traumatizing as what happened to Ally (@allykbergin) in her viral video she posted to TikTok.
The TikTok creator (@allkbergin) uploaded doorbell camera footage of her building’s maintenance men knocking on her front door as a dog inside the unit barks. After not hearing a response they opened the door to her home and after a few moments, Ally screams inside. Both of the maintenance workers audibly gasped, shut the door, stared at one another and backed away. The end of the clip showed them slowly walking off-camera in shock.
Ally wrote in the caption, “Not my maintenance men accidentally walking in on me butt a$$ naked.”
Most of the viewers laughed and made light about the situation. Ally seemed to have a good spirit about the matter, though one user reminded viewers that “it’s really not funny. It’s scary af.” Many of the comments, coming mostly from women, discussed how they shared this fear with Ally. To have this happen to you, or something similar is certainly a violation of one’s privacy.
Luckily, Ally was able to make light on the situation, though it’s a nice reminder to invest in an extra lock on your apartment door if you worry someone with a master key might get a little too nosy.
